REFLEKTOR2 play their haunting score in a semi improvised performance to Weggener’s classic silent film DER GOLEM, forerunner of the Frankenstein genre.
The 1920 silent horror film Der Golem was inspired by the fantasy figure of the Golem in Jewish legend. When the Holy Roman Emperor issues a decree expelling Jews from the ghettos in Prague, Rabbi Loew moulds a life-size figure of the Golem from clay and invokes the spirit Astaroth to bring the figure to life in order to protect the Jewish people. As astrological movements shift the Golem’s behaviour becomes dangerous and threatens nearly everyone he meets.
